QUICKBLOCK is best known as modular tactical training environments used across the UK by both MoD and Tactical Police Units, but recent projects have demonstrated that the system's potential extends far beyond training. Military Engineer units have been exploring how lightweight, rapidly deployable modular infrastructure can help solve operational challenges in force protection, operational infrastructure, deployable welfare facilities, and engineering innovation.
As operational requirements continue to evolve, the need for infrastructure that can be transported easily, assembled quickly, and adapted to changing conditions has never been greater. These experimental projects show how QUICKBLOCK is helping military units explore new ways of meeting those demands.
Exploring New Defence Applications for QUICKBLOCK
While QUICKBLOCK has become widely recognised for creating realistic CQB and FIBUA training environments, several British Army units have recently explored how the same modular system can be applied to wider operational tasks.
From protective structures to expeditionary welfare facilities, these projects demonstrate the versatility of the system across a range of defence applications.
7 Signals Regiment – Protective Communications Structure
7 Signals Regiment used QUICKBLOCK to construct a protective structure designed as a potential replacement for current C3 tentage.
The project investigated how rapidly deployable infrastructure could provide a ballistically protective, secure and functional working environment while reducing both construction time and the logistical burden associated with more traditional building methods.
By utilising lightweight modular blocks that can be transported efficiently and assembled without specialist equipment, the regiments innovation team demonstrated how QUICKBLOCK could support communications infrastructure in deployed environments where speed, protection and flexibility are essential.
23 Engineer Regiment – Expeditionary Ablutions Facility
During an exercise in a remote area of Central America, 23 Engineer Regiment required an ablutions facility in a location where conventional construction methods and heavy equipment were impractical.
Using flat-packed QUICKBLOCK units, personnel constructed the facility in less than half a day without requiring specialist tools or previous experience with the system.
The project highlighted how rapidly deployable infrastructure can support welfare requirements in harsh environments while minimising transport requirements and reducing construction time.
Exercise EAGLE SAPPER – Force Protection & Survivability
As part of Exercise EAGLE SAPPER on Salisbury Plain, 9 Parachute Squadron, 23 Parachute Engineer Regiment, evaluated QUICKBLOCK as part of a series of force protection and survivability experiments.
The system was integrated into trench systems and urban environments alongside both traditional and emerging force protection materials to rapidly create cover from observation and fire.
The exercise demonstrated how modular infrastructure can complement existing protection measures while providing a flexible solution that can be adapted as operational requirements change.
"QUICKBLOCK proved to be incredibly versatile in a range of complex operating environments. From trenches to the urban environment, Airborne Sappers were able to create quick and effective cover from view and fire by pairing this system with new and traditional force protection materials. A great addition to Ex EAGLE SAPPER and a force protection method of the future."

39 Engineer Regiment – Engineering Innovation & Capability Development
39 Engineer Regiment incorporated QUICKBLOCK into an engineering exercise to assess its potential across both above ground and subterranean applications.
The activity enabled serving Royal Engineers to evaluate the system's performance in a variety of engineering scenarios while providing valuable user feedback to support future capability development.
The exercise also explored how modular infrastructure could be employed across a wider range of defence and security tasks beyond its established training role.
Supporting the Future of Defence Infrastructure
These projects demonstrate how QUICKBLOCK is evolving beyond tactical training environments to support a broader range of defence applications.
Potential uses include:
- Force protection structures
- Protective communications facilities
- Temporary operational infrastructure
- Expeditionary welfare facilities
- Engineering capability development
- Rapidly deployable field infrastructure
With a lightweight, flat-packed design that requires no specialist tools or previous construction experience, QUICKBLOCK enables military units to rapidly establish adaptable infrastructure wherever it is required. When filled with locally sourced sand or soil, structures can also provide enhanced ballistic and blast mitigation capabilities for force protection applications.
